Karim Benzema’s appearance and brace against Manchester City have put his name in the history books of Real Madrid once again in the 4-3 defeat at the Etihad in the first leg of the semifinals.
The Frenchman equalled Paco Gento’s record of appearances in the famous Real Madrid shirt with 600 appearances.
Benzema graced the occasion with a brace and that took his tally to 41 goals in 41 games this season, his best goal-scoring season for Real Madrid both in La Liga and ChampionsLeague, with this brace, he has now scored 14 goals in this season’s competition, surpassing Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.
Real Madrid is still alive in the competition and could add to his tally when he faces Manchester City at the Bernabeu in the reverse fixture of the tie, he has set his sight on being crowned the Champions League’s top scorer for the first time in his career, he remains the most decisive player in the competition this season which placed him in a better position to win the Ballon d’Or with his 14 goals so far.
The former Lyon attacker becomes the fifth player to score 41 goals in a single season in Real Madrid’s history, after Cristiano Ronaldo, Ferenc Puskas, Alfredo Di Stefano and Hugo Sanchez.
