Former Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic is of the view that Chelsea can still advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League despite the 3-1 defeat against Los Blancos in the opening tie at the Stamford Bridge.

Kovacic experienced Real Madrid’s comeback against Wolfburg, where the Spanish team was trailed by 2-0 Germany before the tie was turned around at the Santiago Bernabeu thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliance and the former Inter Milan midfielder believes that his current team can stage a comeback when they face the 13th European Champions.

“There are many comebacks that I can draw inspiration from,” Kovacic said. “I remember when we lost 2-0 against Wolfsburg with Real Madrid and then at the Bernabéu we came back 3-0. Chelsea lost 3-1 against Napoli and then came back. Football has always surprises”

Chelsea is not strange to such a situation as they have experienced it in the past and bounced back on numerous occasions and secure the next round qualification and in some cases, the Blues even forge ahead to win the title by coming from behind.

Kovacic joined Real Madrid from Inter Milan and enjoyed a successful spell with the Bernabeu outfit but his lack of regular playing time under Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane saw him secure a loan move to Stamford Bridge before he made the move permanent last summer.

Real Madrid will aim to end Chelsea’s reign as the defending champions of the tournament by finishing their unfinished business at the Bernabeu on Tuesday evening in front of their home fans.
